The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) today, 26 October 2026, published its home sales and mortgage data for August, and the province of Tarragona stands well above the average. There were 1,330 home sales, 14.5% more than in August 2025, and 887 home mortgages, 17.6% more. Across Spain, the rises were 3.4% and 2.3%. If you are thinking of buying or selling in Reus, Tarragona or the Costa Dorada, this is what the figures say.
Sales: new builds almost double
Of the 1,330 sales in the province in August, 269 were new homes, compared with 147 a year earlier (+83%). Resales, which are still the vast majority, totalled 1,061, 4.5% more.
The province is also growing faster than its surroundings: across Catalonia, sales rose 10.3% year on year, and in Spain 3.4%.
The figure should be read in context. August is usually a slow month: Tarragona had 12% fewer sales than in July (1,512), and Spain 19.7% fewer. In addition, the INE statistics record sales registered that month at the land registries, which usually correspond to transactions signed weeks earlier.
So far this year, the province is keeping up the pace
Between January and August, 11,512 home sales were registered in the province of Tarragona, 1.0% more than in the same months of 2025. In Spain, the year-to-date figure is down 2.3%. By type of home, new builds in Tarragona are up 13.4% so far, while resales are 1.1% below last year.
Mortgages: more loans, and larger ones
- Number: 887 home mortgages in August (+17.6%). From January to August they total 7,491, 12.6% more than in 2025, compared with 5.1% in Spain.
- Average amount: about €140,150 in the province, 14% more than in August 2025. This is our own calculation based on the total capital and number of mortgages published by the INE. The Spanish average is €181,285, a record according to idealista.
- Capital lent: from January to August, banks lent 23.1% more in the province for home purchases than in the same period last year.
Slightly more expensive financing
The average interest rate on new home mortgages in Spain was 3.08% in August, the highest since January 2025. The average term is 26 years and 64.1% of mortgages were signed at a fixed rate. The INE does not publish the average rate by province. For more context, we explain how the rise in the Euribor affects buyers and sellers.
What does this mean for you?
If you want to sell, the data shows a market with demand in the province: more buyers are closing deals and more of them are getting financing. But they are also taking out larger mortgages at higher rates, so they compare carefully. Setting an asking price in line with the market is still the best way to sell without waiting months.
If you want to buy, competition for homes is not easing, especially for new builds. Having your financing worked out and knowing what price is reasonable in each area gives you an advantage when negotiating.
